The Texans are heading off to face our Gulf Coast brethren over in New Orleans this weekend for the annual "dress rehearsal" game in Week Three of the preseason. The Saints are not anywhere near the powerhouse they were just a few short seasons ago, but they can still easily threaten the rest of the NFC for a wild card spot if everything goes just right. Having a future Hall of Famer at quarterback helps with that, of course. Here are a couple quick matchups to watch this Sunday, as well as all of the information you need for when, how, and where to watch the game.
Brandin Cooks v. Kevin Johnson
Rookie corner Kevin Johnson passed his toughest test yet with flying colors last week when he faced the freakish size and speed combo of Demaryius Thomas. This game, however, features a whole different kind of beast in Brandin Cooks. Cooks is not only faster than Thomas, but exponentially quicker and a hell of a route runner to boot. The second year receiver out of Oregon State has been virtually unstoppable in his prior two preseason outings, but the Texans are also easily the best secondary he has faced so far this August. This is a strength-on-strength matchup for sure – let’s see who wins.
Brian Hoyer v. Rob Ryan
Rob Ryan is – and always will be – a blitz happy defensive coordinator. Even if he saves his "best stuff" for the regular season, Ryan still likes to send pressures from all different directions at every possible opportunity during the preseason because that helps him evaluate how his linebackers and safeties are picking up their "hot" assignments. That impacts Brian Hoyer, of course, because it lets the coaching staff evaluate his ability to identify blitzes pre-snap and check into the appropriate play to get the offense out of trouble. If Hoyer struggles to keep the offense moving against Ryan’s basic pressure packages, let alone his disguised ones, we may have a problem. Hoyer will get the vast majority of the snaps this week at quarterback seeing as how this is the dress rehearsal game, so at the very least he should get enough reps to work out some kinks…hopefully.
