Tom Savage Is Houston Texans’ Backup Quarterback “Right Now”

With a caveat, but still. The question is what the Texans do next.

He’s #2! He’s #2! For now, anyway.

When the Texans re-signed Brandon Weeden a few months ago, there was some question as to whether he or Tom Savage would serve as the QB2 to Brock Osweiler. Aaron Wilson reports that Bill O’Brien answered that question today.

"I would say right now it's Tom Savage," O'Brien said. "I think he's No. 2 right now. That's not to say that Brandon Weeden hasn't done a good job. Tom has really improved."

Although O’Brien qualified the statement with "right now," that’s the most definitive statement we’ve publicly heard that the third-year pro out of Pittsburgh is ahead of the former first round pick from Oklahoma State on the Texans’ depth chart.  Wilson reports that Savage isn’t letting the praise go to his head.

"I have a crap ton to improve on," Savage said. "I'm excited to watch the film and get better. That's what it is. You can never be perfect in this league. You can always find something to improve on."

If Savage continues to cement his place directly behind Osweiler, the question turns to whether the Texans decide to keep three QBs on the roster. Gary Kubiak rarely did during his time in charge of the Texans, but Bill O’Brien routinely has.  If the Texans did decide to part ways with Weeden, they'd see some cap savings from the transaction in 2017.

If you were running things down at NRG Park, would you keep Weeden on the 53-man squad, or would you want to see that roster spot used elsewhere?
