Thanks to Wotan for making sure I saw this on Twitter:
Texans ILB Brian Cushing underwent shoulder surgery, a "clean up" he said recently. No surgery necessary 4 broken bones n lower back.
— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) January 30, 2017
Texans fans will recall we learned in December that Brian Cushing was somehow gutting his way through the season with two fractured bones in his back. Now it would seem fair to assume that Cushing was also dealing with some sort of shoulder issue during the season, though there’s no way to know the severity of it or when it began bothering him. Regardless, that’s a tough dude.
Cushing has three years left on the six-year extension he signed with the Texans back in 2013. According to Spotrac, that deal currently features a cap hit of more than $9.5 million (with $4.2 million of dead money) in 2017 and a cap hit of $9.7 million (with only $1.2 million in dead money) in 2018. With the emergence of Benardrick McKinney and the Texans potentially looking for cap space to accommodate re-signing players like A.J. Bouye, the team may have a tough decision to make with regard to Cushing’s future in Houston.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you expect Brian Cushing to be a Texan next season?
