I was in College Station this week for work training. I’ve gone from kissing in the bathroom to metering in the switch gear. While I was there, I went for a run from the hotel room to Kyle Field and back. It took me behind an apartment complex, by a golf course, around the football stadium, through the center of campus, and then back home. I didn’t like it.
Now, I don’t know what I’m about to say is true or not. It’s impossible to understand a place in five days and a six mile stroll. But this is how I feel. The campus is a variety of brown buildings, and the immediate vicinity of it was nothing but chain restaurants and stores. The same things as everywhere else, all coagulated into a capitalist mass. It seems like a place that was cool as hell twenty years ago, but now is tasteless and sterile. Like a subdivision, the surrounding area around campus could be picked up and placed in any part of the country and match up congruently.
