You’ve seen the BRB masthead’s predictions for today’s cross-conference matchup between the Texans and 49ers already, but Dave Fucillo of our sister site - Niners Nation - has something to say as well. Here is his prediction for both this game and the rest of the season from the perspective of an optimistic Niners fan.
Game Prediction:
The 49ers are only 2-10, but the two wins have come in their last three games. They moved Jimmy Garoppolo into the starting lineup last week, and he set a franchise record for most passing yards in a starting debut. The Texans provide a stiffer challenge than the Bears, but after last week, it's hard not to be optimistic.
I think we see the 49ers scratch out another close win this week. They didn't get into the end zone in their win over Chicago, but I think we see that happen this week. I'm thinking something like a 20-13 win.
Season Prediction:
The regular season is almost over, but moving Jimmy Garoppolo into the starting lineup has turned this into almost like a second mini-season. In one game, the offense showed a spark we have not consistently seen. It remains to be seen if it will hold up, but there is some optimism.
All that is to say that if the 49ers can build on last week, they could very well win a couple more games before the end of the season. If they beat Houston, a win over Tennessee or Jacksonville at home is not the craziest possibility. Sure, it hurts their draft positioning, but it would mean the team is showing notable signs of progress. I'll take that and dropping four or five draft spots any day of the week. I think we see the 49ers finish 4-12, give or take, and next fall they are a team media analysts suggest as a playoff sleeper for 2018.
What say you, BRB? Are you convinced that Jimmy Garoppolo was all the 49ers needed to start winning games? Do you believe that with one good offseason they can turn into playoff contenders in 2018? Sound off in the comments below.
