Although the clamor for Deshaun Watson to become the starting quarterback for your Houston Texans is sure to spike every time Tom Savage throws an incompletion, interception, or takes a bad sack, Bill O’Brien has made it clear that Savage is the Texans’ starting quarterback. Today, at the team’s charity golf tournament, Savage spoke with reporters and said he is “super-ready” for the task of holding onto the QB1 job.
That’s cool, I guess. Candidly, I’m a bit disappointed in Savage. I mean, Zach Mettenberger once vowed to refuse to relinquish the Titans’ starting quarterback job “...without a fight to the death.” With that being the gold standard for quarterback competitions in the NFL, I don’t think it’s asking too much for Savage to at least challenge Watson to pistols at dawn for the honor of succeeding Brock Osweiler under center in Houston.
