TEXSON’s Predict-a-thon 2017 BOB’s 4TH Year’s A Charm Tour"

After the DRAFT, OTA's and Camp, our Houston Texans are again taking to the field. That's right, the "AFCS champs two years in a row Brian", are locked and loaded in their quest to get a Lombardi Award.

The problem is this year as every year there are 31 other teams (okay maybe not the Browns or Jets); okay 29 other teams with the same goal. Sure, I am aware that this is the NFL and anything could happen, but then reality shows up and you have to ground yourself.

This year's Predict-a-thon has a title (if you didn't notice). More background on that later. Our Houston Texans are at a crossroads. This crossroads began with firing of offensive coordinator Bob Godsey and the unloading of the QB formerly known Brock who managed to abysmally win 8 games and earn roughly 2 million dollars per game for it. The team also lost AJ Bouye to the free agency who signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He and the Texan's front office finally drafted their QB of the future in Deshawn Watson and in the same breath named Tom Savage the starter. Other notable occurrences such as the contract extensions to Fiedorowicz, Prosch, Hal, and DeAndre "Mo Money" Hopkins plus, the cutting of Nick Novak for a kicker who won the entire alphabet with his last name. I am really looking forward until the play-by-play guy has to say it during a moment of excitement (lol). I will refer to him as Ahab, because Ahab was the baddest dude I known of with one leg. Finally, at the time of this writing All-Pro Tackle Duane Brown is MIA and at the time of this article looks as if his return isn't happening.

Thus, the title "BOB's 4th Year's A Charm Tour" is based on a few of my personal observations:

(BOB for those of you who have been living under a rock is the affectionate name for Bill O'Brien.)

Bill O'Brien is in the 4th and last year of his contract. After three years of 9-7 seasons, He is entering the season calling the offense with no OC, with an unproven starter at QB whom he drafted and to date thrown no regular season touchdowns. A QB who probably wouldn't be starting had the Romo deal went through. He is plagued with little or no upgrade to the offense line (less Duane Brown) with the only upgrade at center with Nick Martin's return. He enters the season with 5 running backs, 3 tight ends, and 4 wide receivers.

On defense, the return of JJ Watt gives a really good front 7 the potential for a really great front 7. Our inside linebacking corps is one of the finest on any team in the NFL. There are however two questions with our defense depth and reliability of the secondary. The secondary has reliability in Johnathan Joseph, yet at his age one often wonders when the decline will happen. There is Kareem Jackson who has been so far up and down throughout his career. There is Kevin Johnson who has been in the league for two years and has potential, but his health has been an issue his first two seasons. At safety Andre Hal and Corey Moore both unproven in consistency.

Finally, the special teams.... SOSDD. To borrow a line from Forest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that." Pray for us. The Joe Marciano Curse is real.

This year is BOB's 4th Year's a Charm Tour for the Texans. Will he make it, not? Will it be a fourth 9-7 AFCS champs 3 years in a row Brian? No one knows for sure, but even if it's a bad one. Say to yourself, we could be Cleveland.

Now that I have described the Texans from Texson's perspective, let's turn that eye to the rest of the AFCS. Most pundits have seen the continued growth of the Tennessee Titans. A solid running game was bolstered and the addition of Eric Decker at WR and a defense that is getting better annually. The Jacksonville Jaguars have their issues offensively yet have the potential to be successful if Blake Bortles finally matures into a better game manager. Defensively the Jags are reminiscent of where the Texan defense was during the early tenure of Gary Kubiak and will have their ups and downs. The Indianapolis Colts have the best QB in the division, fortunately this year he is recovering from surgery and the defense is in need of surgery. However, the Colts traded WR Phillip Dorsett to NE for QB Jacoby Brissett. I am looking forward to which team makes the most of that deal.

And that brings us to the 2017 Texson's PREDICTIONS. I will again divide the season by quarters, provide AFCS Final Standings and a few individualized stats for some of my favorite and not so favorite Texans.
