A day after Rick Smith’s emotional news conference, Bill O’Brien met with the media. He opened the session by expressing his support for Rick and Tiffany Smith before fielding questions from those in attendance. As you can imagine, there were plenty of queries about O’Brien’s future in Houston.
Although non-committal on that front, O’Brien said he has already had and was continuing to have “very positive, productive talks” with Bob McNair. O’Brien confirmed that he was involved in the meetings and discussion about the team’s search for a new general manager; in response to specific questions from a couple of reporters, O’Brien also kind of addressed the possible candidacies of Brian Gaine (who Buffalo has granted permission for the Texans to interview) and Nick Cesario.
O’Brien further advised that the organization had given permission to the Browns to interview Sean Ryan for their opening at offensive coordinator and verified that other NFL teams want to talk to Mike Vrabel about head coaching vacancies.
It’s probably not a coincidence that news of several assistant coaches being fired or choosing to find work elsewhere didn’t break until O’Brien’s media obligations were fulfilled. Nevertheless, you can—and should—watch the entire presser on the Texans’ official team site here.
