The Film Room: Bill O’Brien Is Not The Only Problem—It’s Deshaun Watson, Too

This will be a hard pill to swallow for many Texans fans, but our franchise savior isn’t exactly saving the franchise...yet.

This week’s episode of “The Film Room” was a rather difficult, but still completely necessary, one to make. Bill O’Brien is not the problem in Houston...or at least he’s not the only problem.

Yes, some of O’Brien’s play calls in critical moments should be questioned, and yes, the offensive line issues still rear their ugly heads from time to time, but to say that the Texans’ putrid red zone performance against the Cowboys was anything but the fault of Deshaun Watson would be a gross mischaracterization of the film that I watched last week. Watson missed no fewer than four touchdown passes in the red zone that were set up by good play calls from Bill O’Brien, and then missed a fifth touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins as well just from flat out bad decision-making under pressure.

Say what you want about how O’Brien manages a football game, but the man gave his offense every possible opportunity to put points on the board when they got inside the 20s, and simply none of his players could execute well enough to do so.

Don’t believe me? Check out this week’s episode of “The Film Room” and see for yourself!
