I’m bummed. It’s already week 12. We were so young once, but now, here we are, and teams are preparing for playoff journeys, and others are already starting to scout for next season. The team you’re a fan, the Houston Texans, is looking to be part of the former. At 7-3, they are two games up in the AFC South, have won seven in a row, employ a top ten defense, and an offense that has done just barely enough.
Earlier this week Matt Burnham offered his playoff predictions. This isn’t that. This is the entire playoff picture, a summary of where Houston stands.
Currently the Chiefs at 9-2, and the Steelers at 7-2-1 have the #1 and #2 seeds and would have first round byes. The Patriots at 7-3, and the Texans at 7-3 would have the #3 and #4 seeds. In the first round New England would play the 5-5 Baltimore Ravens, and Houston would play the 7-3 Los Angeles Chargers. This would be an incredible opening weekend.
Just outside of the that are the Cincinnati Bengals at 5-5, the Indianapolis Colts at 5-5, the Tennessee Titans at 5-5, the Miami Dolphins at 5-5, and the Denver Broncos at 4-6. Houston has a two game lead in the AFC South, and plays the 30th ranked schedule for the remainder of the year. The play Tennessee, Cleveland, Indianapolis, @ New York (J), @ Philadelphia, and Jacksonville. Their average opponent DVOA is -9.4%. Football Outsiders gives them a 75.6% chance to win the division, a 22.9% chance of a BYE, a 13.5% chance for the Wildcard, and an overall playoff probability of 89.1%.
