The Film Room: How Wade Phillips Defenses Frustrate Tom Brady

New, comments

It’s not as easy as it sounds. Trust me.

It’s been two decades of dominance now and still nobody has figured out how to rattle Tom Brady.

Well...almost nobody.

There have been the occasional defensive coordinator or two that managed to slow down the greatest quarterback of all time, but their successes have been few and far in between. Former Texans DC (and current Rams DC) Wade Phillips, however, does happen to be one of those rare success stories. During Wade’s tenure in Denver a few years ago he strung together multiple great performances against the vaunted Patriots offense, including one that sent his squad to the Super Bowl in 2015.

And one could argue that the blue print he laid out during that frigidly cold Sunday at Mile High Stadium set the stage for the Titans and Steelers to have some success of their own against New England this past season, considering that all three teams used fairly similar philosophies in each of their wins. On this week’s Film Room episode (the 100th episode of the show, by the way!), we will explore those three winning philosophies as well as if Phillips can manage to recreate that magic again this week with the Rams. Enjoy!
