Houston Texans Coaching News: Texans Fire Outside Linebackers Coach John Pagano

San Diego Chargers v Cleveland Browns

The Houston Texans’ 2019 outside linebacker group wasn’t very good. Whitney Mercilus couldn’t generate pressure on his own. He relied on interior pressure for his pass rush routes to make an impact and was in the right spot at the right time to capitalize on plays made by his teammates (like his interception of Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee last month). Brennan Scarlett is just a guy as much as a guy can be. Neither Mercilus or Scarlett was able to do much of anything once J.J. Watt went down. Nor were they able to do much of anything once Watt returned this postseason.

This is the state of things. I don’t know if that’s why the Texans fired outside linebacker coach John Pagano.

I’m just saying it isn’t unreasonable that change to happen. The outside linebacker position was supposed to be a strength for this team, but was instead a point of mediocrity.

The Texans will be looking to fill this role as early as this week as coaches bounce around the league and new to fill out coaching staffs.
