Per Brian McCarthy, the NFL will be requiring fans of all 32 teams who attend games to wear face masks at games during the 2020 season.
For those wondering, yes, it is league-wide: fans at NFL games this season will be required to wear face coverings pic.twitter.com/D139KGKQ4r— Brian McCarthy (@NFLprguy) July 22, 2020
This comes to the surprise of hopefully no one. Stadium security around the league will have their work cut out for them, as there will be some who will undoubtedly try to get around the mask policy. The logistics behind enforcing this rule at all times during the span of a 3-4 hour experience is...dubious.
Imagine this: Average Joe walks into the stadium with a mask. He abides the mandate to the best of his ability. AJ gets 6 beers in (he’s rich) and completely forgets that he has a mask dangling from his left ear. Hooting and hollering commences because real fans GET LOUD. Security, or worse yet, a stadium employee asks AJ to put his mask on. Who knows how he reacts? Obviously, most decent people would apologize and correct the issue. However, that’s just a scenario that comes to mind.
That’s not to mention the problem of cheering with a mask on. Can you imagine how much heat and sweat will build up under that mask? Or how about eating a plate of loaded nachos with extra jalapeño and onion and having the smell come right back at you? What I’m trying to say is that it won’t be fun.
Now, that's not to say that I'm telling anyone to not wear a mask. This mandate is a small, necessary step to ensure fans can take in the games safely. It just feels that there’s a logistical problem to enforcing this rule, and it could potentially put people in danger. Even if 2% of fans in attendance try to skirt this rule, it could potentially infect the fans surrounding them.
What are your thoughts? Will you attend games this year? Do you feel confident that this new mandate will be enforced properly? Will you watch what you eat in fear of the breath you’ll have to inhale? Let me know down below.
