We told you. We tried to tell you. The Laremy Tunsil trade was horrendous. It was a desperate attempt to fix Matt Kalil. It was all-in for the right to give up 41 straight points to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Football is a mercurial game. Houston was never only giving up picks in the late first round by acquiring Tunsil from the Dolphins. From 9-3 in one score games in 2019 to 2-7 in those same kinds of games in 2020. Bill O’Brien exchanged what became Picks #3, #26, and #36 for a left tackle. The Texans are not only a 4-12 team, but they are a 4-12 team without their first or second round pick. Yipee.
Today is the pain from that previous decision. It’s the consequences from previous ills. While everyone else is planting the seeds for the future, the Texans are stuck watching and scouting additional free agent linebackers to sign.
The only hope for a first round selection tonight is also a despairing idea. Deshaun Watson could still be traded tonight; despite the sexual assault allegations, a team could be willing to move a first round pick for a top five quarterback and then deal with whatever comes along with it in the future.
In the meantime, it’s all wait and see. Nothing may happen for Houston tonight. It may take until the third round tomorrow night for Houston to add a new player. In the meantime, live vicariously through other teams, enjoy the game as it takes place, and love the future.
REMINDER: Do not post any tweets or posts that tip picks before they’re announced on the live television broadcast. Doing so will be a bannable offense.
Welcome to the 2021 NFL Draft, Texans fans. The comments are open for business.
