The Texans are now finally starting to request interviews with the coaches they should interview. Today, they officially requested an interview with Rams’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Staley has coordinated the best defense in the NFL this year. The Rams play a two high defense that usual runs quarters, but from this two high shell they will rotate into Cover Three and Cover One occasionally. They’re great at reacting to route combinations, latching onto deeper routes, and funneling the ball into the flat (where their athleticm unknown linebackers and strong safety can chase downhill and tackle). Usually the Rams only rush four, but Staley will bring five occasionally to ensure one-on-one match-ups for his defensive line.
There’s an obvious concern about Staley coaching somewhere else. He won’t have the best defensive lineman in the league in Aaron Donald or the best cornerback in Jalen Ramsey on another roster. For most coaches, this would give me pause. For Staley, it doesn’t, mainly because the Rams have developed and turned players like Morgan Fox, Sebastian Joseph-Day, Darious Williams, Greg Gaines, Kenny Young, Troy Reeder, and Jordan Fuller into key contributors. These are all mid-round, late round, or entirely undrafted players that shut down NFL offenses all year.
Staley is a slam dunk candidate. The Texans should have been talking to him all along.
