2021 NFL Mock Draft: The Houston Texans Select...

We’ve seen numerous mock drafts at this point of the offseason. The typical one-round mock draft, where we put our fingers into the open wounds of the Laremy Tunsil trade. The one-round mock draft where the Texans trade Deshaun Watson and select a quarterback. The three-round mock draft, a blessing from the heavens to make sure fans of this silly football team are included. And now, right here, right now, there’s something entirely different. A dueling mock draft.

For this mock, Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay took turns making selections from the first round through the third round based on who each would select, not who they think said team would select. Mel Kiper has the Houston Texans selecting...

67. Houston Texans

Kiper’s pick: D’Wayne Eskridge, WR, Western Michigan

This is the Texans’ first pick of this draft after former coach/general manager Bill O’Brien traded for Laremy Tunsil. Eskridge is a slot weapon who will also be a key contributor in the return game.

The Texans already have numerous wide receivers on their roster: Andre Roberts, Brandin Cooks, Isaiah Coulter, Keke Coutee, Alex Erickson, Chris Moore, Donte Moncrief, and Randall Cobb are all under contract. Some of these men will never see the light of day with a Texans jersey on.

Although wide receiver isn’t a position of need, it’s still a weak position from a talent perspective. There isn’t a worse wide receiver to pair with Tyrod Taylor than Brandin Cooks. Coutee has everlasting potential. Cobb is overpaid and not very good. The receivers Houston signed this year are mainly special teams players.

The fun thing about this year’s NFL Draft for the Texans—I’m doing my best here—is they can add any players to any position group and it won’t matter. The Texans have a talent deficiency at every position. It’s best player available all the way, baby.

D’Wayne Eskridge? Wide receiver from Western Michigan? Cool. Sounds good to me.
