It’s getting closer.

In slightly more than a month, NFL training camps will open across the country. 29 clubs will start training camp on July 27th, with the Cowboys and Steelers playing in the Hall of Fame Game on August 5th. During this time, teams will compete, compete, compete, solidify rosters, and figure out starting positions. One of the hallmarks of this time are positional battles, as players fight for playing time and roster spots.

For your Houston Texans, who are founded upon the idea of competition, this training camp period offers numerous position battles. This summer we will see:

Quarterback: Tyrod Taylor v. Davis Mills

Offensive Tackle: Tytus Howard v. Marcus Cannon

Swing Tackle: Roderick Johnson v. Charlie Heck, Geron Christian Sr.

Right Guard: Open Position—Howard/Cannon v. Justin McCray, Jordan Steckler, Lane Taylor, and Cole Toner.

Left Guard: Max Scharping v. McCray, Steckler, Taylor, and Toner.

Slot Receiver: Keke Coutee v. Randall Cobb, Alex Erickson, and Taywan Taylor

Outside Receiver: Chris Conley v. Nico Collins, and Isaiah Coulter

Tight End: Jordan Akins v. Kahale Warring, Antony Auclair, Pharoah Brown, Ryan Izzo, Brevin Jordan, and Paul Quessenberry

Defensive Tackle: Open Position—Ross Blacklock v. Brandon Dunn, Vincent Taylor, Jaleel Johnson, Roy Lopez, Maliek Collins

EDGE Pass Rusher: Whitney Mercilus v. Jacob Martin, DeMarcus Walker, Jordan Jenkins, Derek Rivers

MIKE Linebacker: Christian Kirksey v. Tae Davis, Neville Hewitt

WILL Linebacker: Open Position—Garrett Wallow v. Kevin Pierre-Louis, Kamu Gruiger-Hill, Joe Thomas

Outside Cornerback: Terrance Mitchell v. Keion Crossen, Vernon Hargreaves III, Tremon Smith, Tavierre Thomas

Strong Safety: Lonnie Johnson Jr. v. Eric Murray, A.J. Moore Jr.

Long Snapper: Jon Weeks v. Mitchell Fraboni

The Texans are so in on competition that their roster doesn’t list position groups. Tey don’t have numbers on their practice jerseys and names are removed off the back of helmets. This is a team where the preseason will probably be more exciting than the regular season. With that being said, which upcoming training camp battle is your favorite?
