Houston Texans Injury News: Ka’imi Fairbairn, Charlie Heck Out For Week One

A new batch of news before Sunday’s opener.

There’s newer news than the previous news published earlier this week.

In the last day, the Texans signed Danny Amendola and traded Bradley Roby to the Saints. Lost in the shuffle is that Houston added two other cornerbacks. Jimmy Moreland was acquired off waivers. Cre’Von LeBlanc, a member of the Eagles’ bizarre 2018 secondary, along with kicker Joey Slye, will join Houston’s practice squad. Cornell Armstrong was waived with an injury settlement off IR.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Charlie Heck, after a great preseason where he won most improved Texans player, would start at right tackle. Unfortunately for him, Heck came down with a breakout case of COVID-19 and will miss this Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. Rather than do the right thing and play Tytus Howard at right tackle, the Texans are going to plug Marcus Cannon in at RT. Cannon hasn’t played football in a year, missed the entirety of training camp and preseason, and will now get to take on Jacksonville’s slippery edge rushers K’Lavon Chaisson and Josh Allen.

In other injury news, Ka’imi Fairbairn is also out for Sunday. The Texans don’t have another kicker on the roster, though Slye was added to the practice squad. It will either be a Slye call up or going for it on every fourth down with Justin Reid taking over kickoff duties. I guess dreams do come true.

As for Deshaun Watson? He won’t play this week. You knew that. Recalibrate. Reload. Reconfigure.

No kicker. A rusty right tackle. Vernon Hargreaves III starting on the outside. The Texans face plenty of uncertainty when they open the 2021 season against the Jags at NRG Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

UPDATE: Fairbairn has been sent to Injured Reserve.
