The last time Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield squared off on a football field was in the College Football Playoff semi-finals all the way back in 2015. Watson only threw for 187 yards en route to a blowout victory over Mayfield’s Sooners, but DW4 also contributed an absolutely monstrous 145 yards on the ground to offset that. Meanwhile, Mayfield had a relatively “rough” night himself, topping the 300-yard mark but not before throwing two critical interceptions and taking a beating in the pocket for four straight quarters.
It was a humbling loss for Mayfield to be sure, and he would go on to bottle that frustration and tap into it for the next two years while utterly destroying nearly every defense he faced. Unfortunately, he never got a second chance to set things right with Clemson, but when you look at all of the prominent former Tigers on the Texans roster, his showdown with Watson and company later this season could be the next best thing.
Today’s “Film Room” episode is all about Mayfield’s rapid ascension to the starting role ahead of Tyrod Taylor and what the Texans’ defense should expect from him when they host Cleveland in early December. Enjoy the show!
