Finally. Optimism. You remember what that felt like?

Once again, it’s a new era in Houston. Only this time, it feels real. Now that the Houston Texans have hired DeMeco Ryans and are searching for new coordinators, there’s a true sense of relief and excitement among the fanbase. However, with ever new beginning comes some intricate and specific items we have to consider and look out for.

Let’s evaluate several of the Pros and Cons of the recent head coaching hire.

Pro: Six year contract encourages long-term focus for the franchise.

After three consecutive seasons firing a head coach, it is beneficial for both sides for there to be a long term contract in place to err on the side of development.

Con: Offensive-minded coaches are all the rage and are what lead to Super Bowl teams.

The final four teams this year were all lead by offensive-bred head coaches. Last year both head coaches came from the offensive playbook. In a league where the script is written from the offense’s perspective, having a coach who plays by that script is quite beneficial. The Texans going defense is a tad peculiar, but not an issue overall.

Pro: A demonstrated commitment to the African American coaching community.

I want to approach this properly, but also not shy away from this topic. The way the Texans have hired their last two head coaches with the subliminal intention as transitional coaches has left many in the media and in coaching communities with disdain for the organization as a whole. For a team that almost hired a coach last round with zero coaching experience, I believe this is a strong indication of the ownership’s commitment to developing and nurturing a diverse coaching pool in the NFL.

Con: if this does go poorly and Ryans is in fact fired after one or two seasons, the mark against the franchise’s recent head coaching decisions will be inexcusable.

The team’s recent short-term choices have implications beyond the game. For a league looking to improve its diversity and inclusion initiatives, they cannot afford for one of its franchises to rotate through coaches at such an appalling rate.

Pro: Immediate excitement from the fanbase.

It’s obvious that interest is in a trough right now between the losing and poor mismanagement of the team. Even the Texans’ appear to be aware. For all intents and purposes, this choice has both compelled fan interest but also been a good hire for the sake of being a good hire. For instance, the Gary Kubiak hire was received with an “okay cool”, but was overall a strong head coach decision. The story hasn’t been written on Ryans’ coaching career, but the reaction has been abundantly positive.

Con: Lack of coaching experience.

Ryans has only been within one system and franchise. He did get promoted following the departure of head coach Robert Saleh, but he lacks a full coaching journey. It does say something that he’s risen to prominence so quickly, but a coach who doesn’t have experience with multiple player groups can be a concern.

Pro: A young coach.

Is it that hard to find? Young up-and-coming coaches are all the rage right now. Finding the next long-term coach is extremely difficult and their shelf life is next to nothing. However, teams that can land a Mike Tomlin-level coach instills stability for a decade-plus. A coach who’s energy will captivate the fanbase is like a breath of fresh air while driving next to the sewage in Bellaire.

Con: The San Francisco 49ers have talent the Texans don’t posses.

The Bay Area Boys have pass rushers, linebacker talent, and depth on defense the Texans could only hope to have in five years. Having that level of talent makes any defense prosper. It’s worth asking: was it the coach or the player? We’ll find out, and everyone suspects it’s C, ‘Both’, but any scheme looks great when you have a Bosa pressuring the QB and Fred Warner devastating anything in site.

Pro: Texans young defensive talents have a new mentor.

Derek Stingley Jr., Jalen Pitre, and Christian Harris all had productive rookie seasons in 2022, but all left a lot on the table. DeMeco Ryans has been known for nurturing young talent and being a leader to look up to. If we hope to get anything out of these young stars, it’s now on Ryans to make it happen.

Con: Texans will have to find a suitable defensive coordinator to fill in under DeMeco Ryans systems.

The Texans are without a defensive coordinator. There is plenty of talent on the market, but finding the right one may be trickier than you think. There’s a balance to be struck here; you need a guy who both fits into what Ryans wants from his defense but also has enough self-discipline to install his own set of plays and schemes. Someone who can call the defenses but isn’t too much of an upstart themselves that they’ll clash with a new coach. I can see the Texans doing a Romeo Crennel-esque hire and taking on a guy with years of experience to be the father in the room.

Who passes the hype test?

In economics there is the concept of “opportunity costs.” Essentially it comes down to the fact that there are an infinite number of possibilities that one could spend their money on, spend their time on, or, in this case, hire to be their head coach. Once you make a decision, there are any number of options that you’ve turned down. That is the opportunity costs.

It’s at this point that I want to remind the reading public about something I’ve said before. We can only grade moves on the information available at the time. Hindsight is not a good indicator of the wisdom that goes into any decision. The good news is that the Houston Texans have interviewed eight guys (one has since dropped out) and all the seven remaining guys have some level of competence required to create some buzz.

So, in this edition of Value of Things we will rank order some of the candidates in order of hype. Simply put, the Texans need some buzz. They need excitement. They need hope. All seven would generate some of that, but who would generate the most and why? What we will also list is the one question each should have to answer before they took over. I’d assume there were many more questions involved in hiring THE coach but we will list the questions fans would most like to ask of each one.

DeMeco Ryans— The Betting Favorite

Why the hype: He coaches the number one defense and he was a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker in Houston. He would have more love here than anywhere else he could be hired. His leadership skills are off the charts and known to everyone he has played with or coached. In essence he would be like hiring Mike Vrabel if Vrabel were returning to his stomping grounds. That alone would make this a home run hire.

What’s the question? Yes, he has the number one defense, but he arguably also has the most talent. Is there anything he is doing specifically scheme wise to make them number one or does he simply tell Nick Bosa to go get the quarterback? What are his ideas to transform a below average unit with below average talent into something resembling a good NFL defense?

Shane Steichen— A Close Second

Why the Hype: Jalen Hurts is definitely a top five MVP candidate. No one dreamed that was possible. Steichen was Justin Herbert’s offensive coordinator in 2020. You could argue that Herbert was better as a rookie than in either of the past two seasons. So, that’s two different quarterbacks with different styles that could have done their very best under Steichen. Imagine him with Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud.

What’s the question: How responsible is he for this offense? Nick Sirianni was the OC in Indy before coming to Philadelphia so isn’t this really his offense. Plus, is their offense really this revolutionary or is it just the product of all of the awesome talent that they have? So, this criticism is similar to DeMeco Ryans except that Ryans definitely runs that defense. Does Steichen really run this offense on his own?

Jonathan Gannon— The Early Favorite

Why the Hype— This is where the hype train probably runs off the tracks. The Eagles are good and their defense is good. So, the hype is likely the fact that he runs a successful unit that wins a lot of football games. They were eighth in points allowed this season, third in yards allowed, and second in yards per play. They were also fourth in turnovers generated. In short, this was a really good defense and he is the one that coached it.

What’s the question: Before we get into this year we need to know what happened last year. Why weren’t you the guy last year? What has changed exactly? Like Steichen, he needs to tell us why the defense is good and what he would do here to make this defense better. The Eagles have a ton of talent on defense, so are they good because of the talent or because of the scheme?

Mike Kafka— The Darkhorse

Why the Hype— Kafka and Brian Daboll took the Giants and Daniel Jones and transformed them into something decent. Some will sour on him because of how the Eagles dismantled them, but we have to remember the talent differential. Talent-wise the Giants probably shouldn’t have been anywhere near that game. Texans fans should also be interested in anyone that has worked with Patrick Mahomes. More than any other remaining candidate, he has overcome long odds to put a decent offense on the field.

What’s the question— He was a quarterbacks coach for the Chiefs and an offensive coordinator under an offensive-minded head coach. So, how much of their success was really due to him or was he merely along for the ride?

Ejiro Evero— Surprising Finalist

Why the Hype- I honestly was going to leave him off the list, but it was reported that he and Matt Kafka were getting second interviews. The other three candidates cannot have second interviews yet, so we shouldn’t read too much into this. Evero was Denver’s defensive coordinator and they had a top ten defense with one of the worst offenses in the NFL and after trading Bradley Chubb. So, while he seems like a real longshot, crazier things have happened.

What’s the question— Like with the rest of the coordinators, it will depend on his plan for the other side of the ball. He is a relatively new face, so it is questionable as to whether he has some of the contacts the others on the list do.

The Final verdict

Remember a few things as we move forward. The most important thing is that we Texans fans feel hopeful about the future now. They will eventually play games and then the hire will either make sense or not. So, the key is for us to record our thoughts in the moment of the hire. No one knows exactly when the hire will happen, but by this time in one month the Texans will have a new coach and it will likely be one of these guys.

Former player drops wisdom like Solomon .

For the most part, former Houston Texans inside linebacker turned San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans has been a fan favorite to land the head coaching gig for H-Town football. While a lot of it is tied to the nostalgia of great memories generated from his playing days alongside Brian Cushing, J.J. Watt and other Texans greats, where there’s smoke, as they say.

The ‘net has been filled with op-eds, supposed scoops, hawt takez, and a wide variety of other “reasons” to persuade the football fates to weave Ryans back into Houston. Along the way, some has been total wishful thinking, while others have very sound reasoning.

Enter former Texans defender turned local radio personality, and all around great guy Seth Payne.

If you have a few minutes, seriously even if you don't, watch Seth’s video.

Far too many people either don’t understand what true leadership is, or value the impact it has on any organization. All the resume bullet points, collective stats, pitstops on the career superhighway and so forth mean jack squat if a coach isn’t a leader of men.

Multimillionaire athletes do not follow coaching resumes. They don’t follow experience. They don’t follow coaching trees/lineage.

They follow leaders.

Vince Lombardi. Al Davis. Chuck Noll. Bum Phillips. Bill Parcells. Bill Belichick.

All leaders of men.

Demeco Ryans is a leader of men.

Cal McNair is not. However, Cal is in the unique position to bring in a familar leader who can do great things to not only repair this franchise’s reputation, but turn it around and make it a legit contender.

Now, there are some roadblocks. Most notably, would Ryans want to coach here? If he wasn’t at least open to the idea, he likely wouldn’t have interviewed in the first place.

So, assuming Ryans is open to taking the reins of the Texans. What’s next?

Now, if this doesn't work out for Nick Caserio and crew, and Ryans goes elsewhere, it’s not the end of the world. Jonathan Gannon is a serious contender in his own right. His Philadelphia Eagles defense is seriously formidable.

But, Gannon won’t re-ignite a smoldering fanbase the way Ryans will. She won’t immediately spike merchandise and ticket sales. He won’t paint the town battle red overnight.

Ryans will.

Now, if J.J. Watt could convince Cal McNair to let him out of his contract so he could simply walk away, does Watt’s endorsement of a head coaching candidate have some pull? Sure hope so!

Is the former Texans Linebacker Coming to Houston?

The Houston Texans coaching search is like a soap opera. Very few people admit that they enjoy those programs, but it is probably a guilty pleasure for more than a few people. After all, those things have to stay on network television somehow. Similarly, many fans say they just want to wait to see who the team hires, but a number of us are captivated by every little nugget that comes across the computer or phone screen.

Sunday night provided another of those shifts when it was reported that DeMeco Ryans had cancelled his interviews with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals. This is usually when the viewing public fails basic math and starts to think that two plus two equals cupcakes. So, let’s go over the possible narratives here before we get ahead of ourselves.

DeMeco knows he will be the Texans coach

This is probably the easiest conclusion that people will make and it is also probably the least likely. Naturally, it doesn’t mean that Ryans won’t be the next coach, but I seriously doubt anyone knows that yet. After all, this report came out before they even announced finishing the Mike Kafka interview. This week they will start second interviews with the finalists. There are just too many reasons why this narrative isn’t likely.

For one, there is already reporting that he will catch up with those two teams. For another, there is also reporting out there that Sean Payton has considered the Texans as one of the two finalists for his services. Either way, there is just way too much going on to assume the narrative above.

DeMeco wants to focus on the Playoffs

This is the leader in the clubhouse. Of course, as of this writing, he has not rescheduled those interviews. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything though. We know the interview with the Texans went long. This of course feeds the first narrative. Many of us have been in bad interviews. They don’t last a long time. It usually involves some verbal fumbling, a resume mishap, and quickly being shown the door.

However, the fact that it went long also feeds into this narrative. Ryans probably budgeted a certain amount of time to the process and the Broncos and Texans just ate up all of that time. It happens. Obviously, he was focused on Sunday night and his focus was rewarded. That fact only intensified as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend.

DeMeco is managing his opportunities

Ryans turned down an interview with the Minnesota Vikings last season. As we saw this year, that was a pretty good situation he turned down. Ben Johnson of the Lions did the same thing this offseason. Maybe Ryans is only interviewing with teams he feels have a good opportunity to turn things around. Maybe he wanted another year of seasoning before he took a job. Maybe a lot of things.

This is another one of those two plus two equals cupcakes. None of us can be sure how he views any individual situation. Aaron Wilson famously said he wasn’t interested in the Texans job and now it is one of two interviews he has done. It would be foolish to speculate anything as far as the Cardinals and Colts are concerned.

The Payton Problem

Following the Sean Payton sweepstakes is about as fun as putting makeup on a pig. Colin Cowherd reported that Payton was most interested in the Broncos. The report I referenced above said he wasn’t interested in the Broncos, but the Texans and Panthers were in play. Other reporting has indicated that he was only really interested in the Los Angeles Chargers if that job came open.

Now that the Dallas Cowboys are out of the playoffs maybe they would make a play for him. Then again, Jerry Jones said Mike McCarthy was his guy. Or, is that really what he meant? Could Payton be using all of this foolishness as a way to leverage more money out of Fox? Then, we get to all of the rumors about what he wants in a contract and what the Saints want for compensation. If we keep going in circles like this I’m afraid I’ll get sick and throw up in the bushes.

The Final Verdict

There is no final verdict. I don’t know anything. Anyone that tells you that they absolutely know is lying to you. The fact is that in the next few weeks the Texans will reveal their next coach. It could be next week. It could be the week after that. They could wait until after the Super Bowl. They will have a coach and all signs point to that coach being better than David Culley and Lovie Smith. Anything more than that is just idle speculation at this point.
